Hi everyone - some of you have been curious about our process so I thought I should list the steps and let everyone know where we are at. I will admit that when we began this process, the mounds of required paperwork made me a nervous wreck...it felt like there would never be a "light at the end of the tunnel" but here we are 9 months later with everything on our side complete. We just received Immigration approval effective 11/28/06 and that is a major triumph in the adoption process! What a relief as that was starting to wear me down!
Now we just wait for the green light on DNA testing. This is where Caylie and her birth Mom have to go together to a clinic near the Embassy in Guatemala to have a swab done to prove that they are related. This is bittersweet for me because on this day Caylie's birth mom will see her again since she relinquished her but at the same time, we need this step to happen in order to move to the next phase.
After that, our case enters Family Court where a social worker reviews our case and interviews the birth mom and child (separately). This takes about a month or 2. The last step is something called PGN - Prodcuraduria General de la Nacion - during this step PGN lawyers review all documents and grant approval. This step can take anywhere from 2 to 4 months.
Finally, Caylie is legally and officially ours and we can go pick her up. Anymore, I don't even try to estimate when we will bring her home. I just keep my fingers crossed it will sometime in the summer of 2007.
